Cincinnati Union Terminal

ESI, Inc. played a pivotal role in the restoration of Cincinnati’s historic Union Terminal, a project that stands as a beacon of pride for the community.

ESI’s Cincinnati-based team approached the task with a deep appreciation for the terminal’s rich history and architectural significance. The 500,000-square-foot building was originally constructed from 1929 to 1933 at the start of the Great Depression. Today, the national historic landmark is home to a museum, library and theater, while still serving as an Amtrak station.

Navigating the intricate interior of the Union Terminal posed significant challenges, particularly in preserving its iconic dome and lighting systems. Despite these obstacles, ESI’s expert craftsmen skillfully relocated electric rooms and meticulously preserved historical fixtures, employing innovative techniques such as QR code mapping to ensure precision and accuracy.

The upgrade to the electrical and lighting systems was one portion of the $212 million renovation project, which also included repairing and cleaning exterior walls, restoring windows, replacing the roof and upgrading plumbing systems.

ESI’s meticulous restoration and replication of Union Terminal’s historical fixtures highlights the company’s unwavering commitment to excellence. Whether replicating lost artifacts or carefully maintaining environmental conditions to protect priceless treasures, ESI’s dedication shines through in every detail.

With nearly 200,000 man-hours invested over two and a half years, ESI’s proudest achievement lies not only in the successful completion of the project but also in the absence of any incidents — a testament to the company’s steadfast focus on safety and precision.
