ILB Electric was the primary electrical contractor at CalPlant 1 — the world’s first commercial-scale facility producing rice straw-based, medium-density fiberboard (MDF). CalPlant 1 uses rice straw, an agricultural waste product, to produce a lighter, stronger alternative to wood-based MDF through a process that produces fewer volatile organic compound emissions and contains no added formaldehyde.
The project was extremely complex from an electrical construction standpoint. ILB Electric proved its expertise by completing, under an accelerated timeline, this project that had vast size and scale and combined American and German engineering.

This project made headlines and won awards. Engineering News-Record named it the Global Best Manufacturing Project in 2021 and the Best Manufacturing Project in the Northern California Region in 2021.
